Jim had singed a contract with Work at Home Steve. Work at Home Steve wanted his bathroom remodeled, which was right next door to his home office. Jim had told Steve about the loud noises that would be involved in the construction process, and that he would not be able to work from home like normal, as the noise would be a distraction.
“I appreciate the concern Jim, but I will be fine”, assured Steve.
The project was started the following week, and the demo began. The old tiles were being smashed behind the closed bathroom door.
Then suddenly a knock on the door, with a turn of the handle appeared Steve from his office.
“Hey guys, so sorry, can you keep it down for just five minutes, I am in a meeting, I would really appreciate it”.
“Sure” replied Jim, a bit irritated. "We will take a quick break”.
Ten minutes later the work started up, another knock was heard, and once again it was Steve.
“Hey guys, my meeting is not quite done. Please give me another 15-20 minutes”.
“I will tell you what, its almost lunch time, so we will take an early lunch, but please make sure this doesn’t happen again, we need to be able to work without distraction”.
“I totally get it” replied Steve, “it won’t happen again”.
The next day the banging started again, with quite a loud ruckus, as Jim blasted a cast iron tub with a sledgehammer.
“Knock, Knock” again appeared Steve, with a latte in his hand. “Guys, so sorry, can you please give me a few more minutes, I am just wrapping up this meeting.”
Jim had enough. “No, we have an agreement, you knew there would be noise, and I warned you beforehand. We can’t keep stopping and going, otherwise we will be here all year.”
“Well excuse me” uttered Work at Home Steve, as he pranced away.
After this event, the tension between Jim and Steve quickly rose, and it became evident that Work at Home Steve’s inconsideration was going make it impossible for Jim to finish his bathroom.
It eventually led to a lawsuit that Jim won. Even though he won, he still lost financially.
